Amarante

The Amarante sub-region includes the municipalities of Amarante and Marco de Canaveses.
"Located within this region, the Amarante sub-region is protected from the influence of the Atlantic Ocean at a high altitude average with higher than average temperature ranges in the region and hot summers. These conditions favor the development of some more late-maturing varieties, Azal and Avesso (white), Amaral and Espadeiro (red). The soil is granitic like most part of the region. The white wines usually have fruity aromas and an average higher alcoholic percentage in the region. But it is the red wine that gives the sub-region of Amarante its fame, since the soil and climatic conditions referred to favor a good ripening of the grapes, especially the Vinhão grape variety, which allows for wines with a charged and vivid color, appreciated by regional consumers."
