Basto

The Basto sub-region includes the counties of Cabeceiras de Basto, Celorico de Basto, Ribeira de Pena and Mondim de Basto.
"The Basto sub-region is the innermost region, achieving a higher average altitude and is therefore sheltered from sea winds. The climate is harsh, with cold and rainy winters and very hot and dry summers, favoring late ripening garpe varieties such as the Azal (white), the Espadeiro and Rabo-de-Anho (red). It is in this area that the Azal variety reaches its maximum potential and allows for very particular wines, with very fresh lemon and green apple aromas. There is a considerable production of red wines that have a lot of green villus and are fresh and full in the mouth."
