Cávado

The Sub-region Cávado includes the municipalities of Braga, Barcelos, Braga, Vila Verde, Amares and Terras de Bouro.
"In the Cávado sub-region vineyards are located a bit throughout the basin of the river that gave it its name, quite exposed to sea winds, on an irregular relief zone and at a low altitude. These factors imply a mild climate, without a great temperature range and with an intermediate and average annual rainfall. In this sub-region beyond the granitic soils, there is a strip of schist soil, although it is not of a significant scope. This climate is suitable for the production of white wines, especially the varieties of Arinto, Loureiro and Trajadura, which adapt perfectly to these conditions. These are wines with a moderate acidity and notes of citrus and Maloideae fruit (ripe pears and apples). The red wines produced in the Cávado valley are mostly lots of Vinhão and Borraçal, which have an intense red garnet color and reveal aromas of fresh fruits. When in the mouth it reveals all the climate freshness of the sub-region where it is produced."
