Lima

The Lima Subregion includes the municipalities of Arcos de Valdevez, Ponte da Barca, Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo.
"In terms of temperature ranges the Lima sub-region is at an intermediate position in relation to other sub-regions. However, this is where the precipitation hits higher values. The altitude at which the vineyard is planted is variable and increases as we move from the coast inland, where the terrain is also more irregular, causing some microclimates within the Lima Valley, and is therefore sometimes referenced as low Lima and high Lima. As in the sub region of the Cávado, there is some granitic soil, as well as a range of schist soils, although of insignificant scope. The most famous white wines of this sub-region are produced from the selection of Loureiro. The aromas are fine and elegant, ranging from citrus (lime) to floral (pink). The Arinto and Trajadura are also well disseminated at this location because they fit well in mild climates influenced by sea winds. The red wines are mainly produced from the Vinhão and Borraçal wine selections. Usually it is the most inland areas of this sub-region where red wines have a better potential due to weather conditions that affect maturation."
