Monção/Melgaço

The sub-region includes the municipalities of Melgaço and Monção.
"The sub-regions of Monção and Melgaço have a very particular microclimate, with three unique and early ripening grape varieties, the Albariño (white) and Pedral (red) and share the Alvarelhão (red) with the subregion of Baiao. In this sub-region soils are of granitic origin, with some local bands of shingle. This microclimate is characterized by cold winters with intermediate precipitation, while the summers are very hot and dry, which denotes a limited influence of the Atlantic. The sub-region has developed around the south bank of the river Minho on a hillside area. The extremes wines of Alvarinho are the symbols of the sub-region of Monção and Melgaço."
